Self-Consistent Model of Roton Cluster Excitations in Liquid Helium II

چکیده
Abstract We have proposed a model of roton cluster excitations in liquid helium II based on a Schrödingertype equation with a self-consistent confining potential. We have derived an equation for the number of atoms in roton excitations, which can be treated as quantum 3D solitons, depending on vibrational quantum numbers. It is shown that the smallest roton cluster is in the symmetric vibrational quantum state and consists of 13 helium atoms. We have also used a modified Born approximation to calculate the s-scattering length for helium atoms. This allows us to calculate all parameters of Landau’s roton excitation spectrum, in agreement to high accuracy with experimental measurements from neutron scattering.

Excitations of amorphous solid helium
We present neutron scattering measurements of the dynamic structure factor, S(Q, ω), of amorphous solid helium confined in 47 Å pore diameter MCM-41 at pressure 48.6 bar. At low temperature, T = 0.05 K, we observe S(Q, ω) of the confined quantum amorphous solid plus the bulk polycrystalline solid between the MCM-41 powder grains. No liquid-like phonon-roton modes, other sharply defined modes at...

We present precision neutron scattering measurements of the dynamic structure factor S(Q ,v) and the elementary excitations of liquid He immersed in aerogel and Vycor. In both porous media, liquid He supports two-dimensional ~2D! layer modes at wave vectors in the roton region that propagate in the liquid layers adjacent to the media walls. The layer modes have a rotonlike energy dispersion rel...

We compare microscopic calculations of the dynamic structure function of helium films adsorbed to a graphite substrate with neutron scattering data. Starting from a generalized Feynman theory of collective excitations, we include successively, three-phonon interactions, self-energy corrections, and experimental broadening and thereby improve the agreement between theoretical predictions and exp...
متن کاملInterpretation of Experiments in the Solidon Model for Rotons
A roton in superfluid Helium can be described as a phonon self-trapped in a region possessing the translation symmetries of the metastable solid. This picture can account for various experimental data, such as the roton wavevector in bulk Helium I1 and Helium films, the temperature de~endence of the roton sap, the roton-roton collision time. It has been shown recently that, under certain condit...
متن کاملExcitations of superfluid helium in porous media
The elementary excitations of superfluid He, characterised by the phonon-roton dispersion curve, have been studied in great detail over the last forty years since the first observation of the roton in a pioneering neutron-scattering experiment in Stockholm in 1957 [1]. The interest today is turning towards the effect of disorder and confinement on these excitations, when e.g. helium is immersed...
